NORMAL- Illinois State University hosted its annual Muslim Cultural Dinner with Ibtihaj Muhammad as the keynote speaker.

Muhammad was the first Muslim American woman on the Olympic team to bring home a medal. Muhammad embraces her background in her career. Not only does she continue to write books as well as advance her clothing line for Muslim women, but she also had the first Barbie with a hijab modeled after her.  At the dinner, Muhammad encouraged the younger generation to be more tolerant and welcome diversity.

“I always tell young people, and girls in particular, to believe in their own journey and not allow anyone else to dictate it for them,” Muhammad emphasized. “Once you decide what your goals are, don’t wait for anyone’s permission.”

After the keynote address, Muhammad answered questions from the audience about her journey as an Olympian and the women who inspire her. Muhammad later gave autographs and took pictures with the audience.
