NORMAL, Ill.- On Monday, Illinois State University’s HerCampus and Women’s History Club collaborated to put together a movie and relaxation event.
HerCampus is a national online women’s magazine that is run by all women.
The movie shown was On the Basis of Sex. It tells the story of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bater Ginsburg who worked hard through the sexism of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s as she tried to prove herself as a lawyer.
HerCampus Editor and Chief Mia Riddell, says HerCampus has been trying to incorporate more women empowerment into their community. She and Lindsey Lamorte, leader of the Women’s History Club, decided Ruth Bater Gingsburg was a good symbol for women empowerment.
Riddell expands on why she is a good role model.
“I think she, what’s the phrase, when people say broke the glass ceiling,” said Riddell. “She pushed boundaries and asked the right questions. She always was curious and that’s what young women need to always remember. There’s never a barrier and if they want to do something they want to do something they can do it.”
Lindsey Lamorte created the Women’s History Club this year at ISU. She felt women in history was under-represented and she dedicate a group to them.
“I wanted to make this club just once a month for people to come to, nice and easy. Just as a reaffirmation of what we stand for. I think it’s awesome,” said Lamorte. “It’s just kind of empowering. That’s all we’re about; just empowering women.”
About 30 women attended this event along with one man. Everyone appeared moved and inspired by Ginsburg when the movie finished as the real Ruth Bater Ginsburg was shown walking up to the Supreme Court.
