Chicago, Ill. – Governor JB Pritzker announced his administration will file a federal waiver to expand Medicaid coverage.

The announcement came a day after the decision to close all schools in the state of Illinois.

According to a press release from the Governor’s office, the request is an effort to expand medical services during COVID-19.

The Pritzker administration started working on the waiver application after the federal government declared a national emergency.

“During this crisis, my administration is working to ensure that those who fear that they may be getting sick, have access to the testing and treatment that they need without being saddled with costly medical bills for their care,” said Pritzker.

If the waiver is approved, Medicaid coverage could expand to the addition of new medical providers. It could also increase access across the state and services to vulnerable populations.
