BREAKING: Illinois State University Spring Break Cancelled

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State University administration says state officials have urged The University to cancel Spring break.

Earlier in the semester, Illinois State University decide to maintain Spring break as scheduled. The decision was made after student survey responses expressed it was crucial to maintain mental health.

Friday afternoon via email President Larry Dietz stated officials have requested that the University cancel Spring Break for public health reasons.

According to the statement, state officials are concerned about the safety of travel during the Spring Break period. They are worried it may result in a significant increase in COVID-19 cases on campus and in the community.

“I recognize that the decision to cancel Spring Break may be met with disappointment, but we must continue to make decisions with health and safety as our top priority,” stated President Dietz. “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Illinois State University has demonstrated its commitment to public health and safety guidance provided by local, state, and federal officials. As we progress to the Spring 2021 term, we will continue this commitment.”

Two additional changes will be made to the Spring Academic Calendar. The first includes “Personal Well-being Days” on March 9-10. These days will have no classes, exams and assignments due. Instead, the University will provide a variety of health and wellness activities will be available.

The second change will include “Reading Days” on April 29-3o. These days will also have no classes, exams and assignments due. These days will provide additional time for students to prepare for final exams. The last day of Spring classes will be April 28.

The semester will begin as scheduled on January 11 and end May 7.
