NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State Swimming and Diving team started their new season on the right foot, besting Evansville 155-144 Saturday afternoon at the Horton Pool.
Freshman Eva Reyes had a perfect opening to her Redbird career with wins in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. This strong start earned her qualifying marks for NCAA Zones in both events, as well as Missouri Valley Conference Diver of the Week.
“Honestly, I was really nervous, because that was my first real meet in a long, long time,” said the San Diego native. “Since it was a home meet, I just wanted to give my best to protect the nest for the birds.”
Reyes added that her nerves never go away during a meet, and that is what keeps her constantly alert.
Illinois State will compete again this Friday at Southern Illinois.
