SPRINGFIELD, Ill. Although COVID-19 numbers are decreasing in Illinois, state officials are closely monitoring the new Covid-19 Omicron sub-variant.

Scientists recently discovered a new Omicron subvariant. Its first official case in Illinois was confirmed in January. The subvariant is up to 50% more transmissible than the original Omicron strain.

Governor J.B. Pritzker said that state officials are closely monitoring the new sub-variant and preparing for another possible wave in Illinois. Pritzker said the state is ready for a potential surge, with plenty of tests and more Covid treatments available. He is asking schools to have a solid testing plan in place in the event cases begin to rise again.

The new strand is currently the cause of 25% of COVID-19 cases in Illinois. However, Pritzker said that it is not leading to an increase in hospitalizations, but is still a definite cause of concern.
