NORMAL, Ill – The Illinois State Softball Team wrapped up the Hilltopper Spring Fling this weekend in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The change of scenery did not appear to aid the Redbirds this weekend, as the 2023 season continues to get off to a rocky start.
After this weekend’s set of games, the ‘Birds have fallen to very lack luster 3-11 record. Inconsistencies continue to appear in the Redbirds play, whether it be a day where the offense struggles to get going or the pitching staff not able to hold a lead, struggles on both sides of the ball have lead to a Redbird season already in jeopardy.
However, despite a 1-4 weekend, including multiple losses to unranked Western Kentucky, there was a bright spot sandwiched between tough losses, as freshman Hannah Meeks tossed a 1- hitter in a 10-0 victory against a solid Jacksonville State Team.
Meeks, who was noted in the preseason as a potential ace of the redbird staff shined in the victory, earning her first career win as a redbird, tossing 5 shutout innings, whilst walking 2 batters and striking out the same number respectively.
Not to mention the Redbirds’ first mercy rule victory of the season, as 5th year senior Emme Olson went 2-4 at the plate, smashing a pair of home runs and driving in a stellar 4 runs on the day, as well as Senior UTL, Dayna Kennedy, who went 1-1 with a home run in the contest as well.
The Redbirds will look to build off these bright spots this weekend as they will travel to Boca Raton, Florida, to compete at the Florida Atlantic Parents-Weekend Tournament.
