NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State University President Aondover Tarhule responded to the recent incident on the 300 block of North Main St. Sunday morning.

Following a “pop-up party” of over 1,000 attendees, gunshots were fired leaving one victim dead, and the other in critical condition.

President Tarhule acknowledged the existing presence of these gatherings promoted via social media, with one occurring in Normal earlier this year. He stated that maintaining campus safety with these events can be difficult, and that him, nor the Normal Mayor Chris Koos wish to see them continue

“Normal Mayor Chris Koos and I have discussed and are in strong agreement that these types of events have no place in our community,” Tarhule said. “Illinois State University is committed to providing student experiences that are safe, inclusive, and reflective of our university values.

Students will have the opportunity to discuss these events and others in the upcoming event “ISU in Conversation” held by Interim Chief Equity and Inclusions Officer, Byron Craig. On October 14 and 15.

“It is possible that members of our community may experience distress as a result of this incident,”Tarhule said. “Students seeking support should not hesitate to reach out at any time to Student Counseling Services at 309-438-3655 or by visiting their website.

Tarhule also encourages students to download the Safe Redbirds app, which allows students to request safe walks, emergency guidelines, etc.

This incident is still considered under investigation by the Normal Police. Anyone with information should contact them at 309-454-9535.
