NORMAL, Ill. — The local Girl Scouts are doing much more than just selling cookies.
Engaging in STEM interests to attending outdoor camps–The Girl Scouts are learning traits of what it takes to be a strong woman one activity at a time.
Membership engagement coordinator Emily Tucker spoke about some of the camps that the girls are participating in.
“There is a day camp and an overnight camp in Springfield and Metamora,” Tucker said. “The one in Metamora has horseback riding, so that’s a big win for a lot of the girls. During camps, the girls get to learn about the outdoors and do some activities there.”
However, The Girl Scouts are not only about community building and making friendships. They are able to learn valuable skills to be used later in their life that go beyond traditional Girl Scout values when joining the group.
“STEM is really big now,” Tucker said. “We have a lot of STEM activities from Daisies all the way up to Cadettes. We have entrepreneurship through our cookie and fall programs, where they learn about handling money and the sale process of that.”
All in all, The Girl Scouts at its core is about building sisterhood, meeting new friends and earning badges through experience. Tucker says the Scouts in McLean County aim to do just that.
