SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State Senator Andy Manar met with lawmakers earlier this week to work on reducing prices for insulin.

Lawmakers proposed to have a monthly cap to out of pocket expenses for insulin. This legislation would make Illinois the second state to place a cap on insulin prices after Colorado.

“When constituents call and say ‘I cannot afford to keep my daughter alive and own a home’, something has to change,” said the senator.

The bill proposed to cap insulin prices to $100 for a 30-day supply due to increasing prices of insulin.

Senator Manar’s proposal received support from State Representative Sue Scherer.

“Just recently I heard about people who say ‘Well, I just can’t afford to keep doing this. So I just take it half the time because that is all I can afford right now,'” said Rep. Scherer.”We have to do better than that.”

The bill also received support from the American Diabetes Association, Illinois State Medical Society, and the Illinois Pharmacists Association.

Senator Manar plans to present the legislation at the fall veto session before the house and senate.
