The Illinois State University Police received a report of an on-campus assault at approximately 3:20 a.m. on Aug. 24.

Four suspects confronted a student on a scooter near the Bone Student Center, knocking him off his scooter and punching him in the face. The suspects also reportedly used homophobic and offensive slurs against the student. After the incident, the student returned to his off-campus apartment and declined any medical assistance.

Due to the physical and verbal nature of the assault, the ISU Police Department believes it was motivated by bias and are investigating it as a hate crime. Anyone with additional information is urged to call detectives at (309)-438-8631.

The ISUPD also encourages people to be mindful of their surroundings and prepared for emergencies by traveling in groups, keeping your cell phone handy and using campus resources like Redbird Safe Walk.
