NORMAL, Ill.- To mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a talk by artist and educator Akiva K. Segan was held on Thursday, January 30, in Stevenson Hall.

This talk is sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. ISU professor Jonathan Druker chose to include Segan because of his years of experience and passion towards the history surrounding the Holocaust.

Druker’s own research examines Primo Levi’s Holocaust writings through the lens of Theodor Adorno’s ‘Dialectic of Enlightenment’ and he has worked closely with Segan.

“I am so impressed with his commitment to the material and talent to it as an artist. he also teaches the material as well, that’s why I think he made such a great presenter for ISU,” said Druker.

Segan has taught in schools, colleges, universities, art museums, houses of worship and other venues in seven U.S. states and in Britain.

He has also taught in Israel during seven teaching trips, including three International Conferences on the Holocaust and Education at the International School for Holocaust Education, Yad Vashem, Jerusalem.

The internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The month of April, however, will be Holocaust Remembrance month and there will be multiple event surrounding the memory of Holocaust victims.
