NORMAL, Ill. – Amid Coronavirus fear, Illinois State University announced it will be extending spring break until March 23 and resume class April 12 through online classes or other instructional methods.
The World Health Organization declared the spread of the Coronavirus as a pandemic.
“That the time frame may be subject to change depending on evolving circumstances,” ISU President Larry Dietz said.
ISU administration announced the decision Wednesday, March 11 via email after other universities, like University of Iowa, took the same precaution.
Illinois State University Laboratory Schools will follow the same protocol.
The email stated University-operated housing will remain closed until further notice. Students in the residence halls, Cardinal Court Apartments, or other university-owned apartments are urged to return to their permanent homes.
Effective March 16, all University-sponsored, non-essential domestic travel and all international travel is suspended until further notice. All Summer 2020 study abroad programs and international internships are cancelled.

“I understand that these actions will create serious challenges for students, faculty, staff members and the greater community that utilizes Illinois State,” Dietz said. “But this pandemic has created unprecedented circumstances making these actions prudent and necessary.”
