NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State Office of Sustainability is helping Redbirds be environmentally friendly while tailgating.

The office hosts the Zero Waste Tailgate every home game to serve environmentally friendly food.

The plant-based menu will be partnered with a solar panel grill that is donated from the Renewable energy society.

“We provide free food, free prizes, free games, just a place to hang out and have a conversation about how to be environmentally conscious while still having a fun time at a tailgate event,” said Braboy.

Chair of the Student Sustainability Committee and Sponsor for the Zero Waste Tailgate, Xavier Braboy, explains that 90% of the waste that is used at their tailgate will be composted, recycled, or reused.

“The other 10% is things that we just cannot get away from. Say if we’re doing cheeseburgers and there’s a plastic wrap around the cheese,” said Braboy.

Braboy explains how they promote their environmentally friendly practices by handing out bags to gather recyclables.

“It’s just about being accessible so you want to be able to give someone something physical that they can do on their own.”

With three separate locations around the Illinois State campus, there are many opportunities to learn more about this innovative tailgate.
